Autumn is a unique time of year! With warm days, but colder mornings and evenings, it can be hard to plan for.

The only thing we can be certain of is that you need to prepare for four seasons in one day!

So, it can be tricky to create fun family days out in Autumn.

But don’t worry. We have you covered with our favourite affordable autumn adventure ideas.

1: All About The Leaves

One of the coolest things about Autumn is the changing colours of the leaves. Hit your local park or botanical gardens to see the beautiful colours. You might even have the added bonus of finding leaf piles to jump in. You could even take a few of the coloured leaves home to do paper rubbings or other craft projects.

2: Hit The Hot Pools

We might not be running out for a swim at the beach on a chilly morning, but you don't have to say goodbye to swimming just yet! There are plenty of hot pools around our beautiful country to enjoy. Lots of towns also have indoor pools for plenty of Autumn swimming fun!

3: Break Out The Bikes

Kids love riding their bikes? Then why not check out some of NZ’s awesome bike tracks? Try the Dunes Trail in Opotiki, The Hauraki Rail Trail in the Karangahake Gorge, the Nelson to Mapua Trail, Otago Central Rail Trail, or the Redwoods Forrest in Rotorua (just to name a few). And there will be plenty of parks close to home for bike riding fun.

4: Fly A Kite

There are some advantages to the wind picking up in Autumn. It makes for excellent kite flying weather! Make your own, hit the local $2 shop, or splurge on a bigger kite and the kids will have a blast seeing them up in the air.

5: Hunt For Treasures

Nature has some amazing treasures if you know where to look for them. Bring a small bucket and take to the bush, beach or countryside to see what you can find. Seashells, driftwood, leaves, small stones, and sticks all make fore great art supplies!

6: Go Rock Hunting

Heard about painted rocks? They are everywhere if you take the time to look for them. Hunt in your local parks or further afield and you’ll be surprised by what you might find. Before you head out, get the kids to paint some rocks of their own to hide. Check out more info on how to master rock hunting and hiding in the NZ Rocks Facebook Group.

7: Try Geochaching

Do you find yourself visiting the same boring places all the time? Explore your own backyard and discover cool hidden spots with geocaching. Simply download one of the many geocaching apps to your smartphone and follow the direction to find hidden spots dotted all around NZ. Who knows, you might discover your new favourite picnic spot!

So, there you go, 7 awesome and affordable ways to enjoy the lovely days of Autumn. Get out there and enjoy them with your family and friends!
