Auckland is New Zealand's largest city with a population of about 1.4 million people, and is the main centre of commerce and industry, with most major international corporations represented in the city. It is perhaps the most vibrant, bustling and multicultural city in New Zealand and has the largest Polynesian population of any city in the world. This cultural influence is reflected in many different aspects of city life. The central city is situated on a narrow isthmus between two harbours, the Manukau to the west and the Waitemata to the east. The suburbs surrounding the city centre are some of the oldest established areas of Auckland with their charming villas, local shopping and dining establishments and historic buildings.
As the city fans west it gives way to established green, leafy suburbs and communities featuring volcanic hills, many of which are now popular parks and reserves. One such suburb is Western Springs which is dominated by a park of the same name. Auckland Zoo, Western Springs Stadium and M.O.T.A.T (the Museum of Transport and Technology) are situated within Western Springs Park and one of Auckland’s most popular public events, Pasifika, is held there annually.
Another famous landmark of the area is Eden Park. Opened in 1900 originally as a cricket ground, the first game of rugby was not played at the park until 1913. Its rich sporting and social history and international profile as a rugby and cricket ground, is unmatched by any other stadium in the country.
